Police Boxes are stationed in major metropolitan areas and they can often assist with directions. In Japanese a police box is called “Koban".

In emergencies, the numbers to call are 110 (police) or 119 (ambulance/fire).

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo's Telephone #* is 81-3-3224-5000.

Earthquakes are a fairly common occurrence in Japan. Typically they are not severe. When checking into your hotel make sure to take note of the emergency exits and instructions in the hotel's room guide. Here are some more tips:

1) Don't panic.

2) When inside, stay inside and take cover. Get under a desk, table, or doorjamb to avoid falling objects.

3) When outside, take cover if you can. If you can't find anything to cover you, drop to the ground and cover your head and neck until it passes.

4) Keep away from windows and don't use elevators.

5) If in a public building, follow the lead of the employees.
